On that fateful afternoon, a Swiss tourist couple—Mr. and Mrs. Davi—were bathing near the outlet channel fed by Phewa Lake. Without warning, the floodgates upstream were opened, causing a sudden surge of water to race down the gorge. Mrs. Davi was pulled into the rapid currents and swept deep into the dark subterranean waterfall chasm.
After an extensive search, her body was eventually recovered three days later down river near Phusre Khola. Following the tragedy, her family requested that the site be commemorated as Davi's Falls. Over decades of local usage, signboards and guidebooks in Nepal gradually transliterated the name into Davis Falls, Devi's Fall, and Devis Fall.
